An Excellent Film School

Film School played Mercury Lounge last night and did they fucking rock. Starting off with intense feedback noise, the left coast lads plunged right into the brilliant "On & On". Their set contained most album tracks, and had a nice flutuation between slow and fast. Check out the video for "Eleven-Eleven" here. Great energy; great vibe. In typical NYC fashion, the hipsters left prior as the hype machine parted with the opening band Margot & the Nuclear So and So's [who sound like the Counting Crows parading as Arcade Fire].

A Wild Tiger

Looks like at least one interesting film will be presented at this year's Sundance. Wild Tigers I Have Known is co-produced by Gus Van Sant, and features voiceover + music from David Tibet of Current 93. The director is Cam Archer, whom I'm not at all familiar with. But it looks like he will be also directing videos for the upcoming Current 93 album Black Ships Ate the Sky. Cam has created one for the wonderful track "All You've Left" by Six Organs of Admittance. I think I've found the Cam/David connection here.

Nurse With Wound have confirmed they will be playing three shows at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall in June on Thursday 15, Friday 16 and Saturday 17. More details will be posted as we get them; tickets are not yet on sale. These are the first NWW shows to be announced since their two concerts in the early 1980s, which Steven Stapleton hated so much that he vowed never to play live again. Let's see if it takes us another 20 years or so to get over the assault on our souls this time.

If you missed the Supergrass set that aired Thursday on KCRW, click here to stream it. This is not the Brit pop the band has been labelled in the past; the boys have matured into a fine rock band. Although I prefer their plugged-in Road to Rouen sound, the acousticness isn't bad. Plus this is indicative of their recent NYC set (seems like this tour was a small US jaunt for the release of the new album and a larger proper tour will take place next year).

I imagine most electronic heads are already aware of the plastikman coming to town this weekend, but if not consider yourself warned. Although his recent sets in the city haven't received the best of reviews, any fan of tech beats shouldn't miss the master himself as we all know what he's capable of. For me personally, MUTEK of '03 was the best DJ set I've witnessed in my life (and I've seen many); this was courtesy of none other than the skinheaded Canadian above - Richie Hawtin.

She Wants Revenge

She Wants Revenge? Does she? Well, apparently so, as implied by this LA band's web site. Made up of Justin Warfield [you may remember him from the Bomb The Bass rap attack "Bug Powder Dust"] and Adam 12, this group has been Spin Magazine's band of the day recently and says that they want to create music that "would make girls dance and cry". Starting from hip-hop origins, SWR certainly fits now in to the 80s nostalgia acts of late; notably Interpol (is that Paul Banks signing?). Nevertheless the act churns out great tunes. See and hear for yourself:

Electronic music legend and New Order band-member, Peter Hook, is coming to The US for his 240 Hour Party People DJ Tour (10 gigs in 10 days!) - and we snagged him for New York. He'll be playing for us at our Lotus GBH party (which we are throwing this week in association with Girls & Boys). Expect to hear one of Peter's excellent sets (this is one rock star who can actually beat match, so watch out). Alex English (Girls & Boys) and DJ Angola will also be spinning in the main room. This is going to be a big one, and there are no advance tickets - so get on the guest list...

We'll also be hosting the Concert After-Parties for Electric Six and Crimea (they'll be playing the Bowery Ballroom earlier in the evening)

In the Flower room this week, Nick Marc (Tiswas) will be DJing the Friction party, playing '80s new wave and rock'n'roll to a colorful collage of nightlife fauna - hosted by Miranda Moondust and Chris B.

New York based On!Air!Library! has broken up but reformed [2/3 of original members] into a new band called Daylight's for the Birds. Described as "the bittersweet bite of moments lost" and "wistful dream pop" and said to fuse "the aural inventiveness of O!A!L! with a newfound post-pop sensibility, resulting in heartbreaking, hum able songs that create towering sonic dreamscapes". The act is currently finishing up the recording of its debut album and will be touring this fall.

Although I imagine that most reading this already mysteriously have the track, Glósóli is now available to download - officially. In my opinion it's one of the stronger songs on the upcoming album Takk...; reflecting a subtle new direction for Sigur Ros.

Depeche Mode's upcoming single Precious has been leaked and sounds amazing. This will be officially released in the US on 10/4. Has elements of Violator, subtle guitar, soft vocals, and slow beats. The boys have (almost) never sounded better!

The Sony Bean

Sony's answer to the iPod Shuffle is the Walkman Bean. In addition to a "quirky shape" this device features a pop-up USB plug to allow for easy music transfer. Most importantly, there is a "cool clear and stylish '1 line bright OLED display'" screen. Could Japan's multimedia giant be taking a fresh bite of Apple here?

Numark will be releasing its iDJ in October. Press release available here. The lack of pitch control will keep this product in the consumer realm, but its compact size makes it a great plug-and-play party device. Phono/line inputs, USB connectivity, and a "turntable spindle receptacle" are nice features. Plus an S video output suggests the possibility of mixing sights as well as sounds?

So the game Darkwatch is released today and has received overall decent reviews. Check Gamespot's comments here. Looks too hard to resist; especially for those going through Deadwood withdrawal. Apparently prizes can be won by joining and logging into the online community. PS2 and Xbox versions are apparently graphically very similar.

So Brian Jonestown Massacre has been cancelling dates lately; 5 total from earlier in the month up until this week. Reasons range from Anton being ill, losing his voice (blamed apparently on the "air conditioning in the south"), and having a friend pass away. Let's hope the second round of NYC shows still happen!

Last Days

Finally saw Last Days on Friday night. Fucking beautiful is my first (and lasting) impression. The usage of sound is amazing [Thurston Moore was the music consultant]; probably one of the best I've experienced in a film. Perhaps Gus could've found better than Michael Pitt, who did good but not incredible in my eyes. A fitting end to a quality trilogy based on death, societal disconnection, and those "moments between moments".

Broken Flowers

Broken Flowers is the new Jim Jarmusch movie due out next week (8/5). Not sure how excited I am for this one; reminds me of the mediocre-at-best Finding Forrester and Lost in Translation. Coffee and Cigarettes as well as Dead Man for me are the finest by jim to date, although Night On Earth has a certain charm. Not sure what the fascination with Bill Murray is; his aging ego results in only predictable performances.

Elves In The Way

There's an article in today's Times worth reading, if not familiar with this phenomenon. I remember when going to Iceland, and travelling the country roads, there would be random spots where the trajectory would suddenly shift and structured rockpiles could be seen at a pivotal spot. Alas these are elves' colonies. Reports of mysterious machinery breakdowns occur when trying to build in their way. It seems Icelanders are split on whether or not they actually believe in these characters, but it appears unanimous that "hidden forces" rule the island. Nature or myth?
